Weathernews Pioneers Data-Driven Business Analytics

Weathernews, the world’s leading weather intelligence specialist, leverages data from its subscriber fleet and a decade-long repository to optimize every vessel’s voyage in alignment with customer business priorities.

The company integrates the highest frequency of AIS data available in the shipping industry with extensive historical voyage data through its Optimum Ship Routeing (OSR) and Performance Monitoring Services (PMS) tools.

“Real-time routing/leg data from 5,000 customer vessels monthly, plus 10+ years of historical data and AIS updates every 2-10 minutes for 32,000 vessels globally—it’s a mind-boggling dataset,” says João Fernandes, Development Manager at Weathernews.

Robust Foundation

This data empowers Weathernews to guide customers on optimal voyage decisions—from Required Time of Arrival and Minimum Voyage Cost to Least Bunker Consumption and Sailing Voyage Patterns.

“We store over 20 terabytes of maritime big data in a secure AWS cloud. As a market leader, this forms our benchmark,” Fernandes adds.

Agility Boost

Weathernews adopted DevOps to enhance IT infrastructure, data analytics, and services agility. “DevOps aligns people, processes, and technology for faster responses, enhanced reliability, and efficient business outcomes,” Fernandes explains. Their cloud-based IT separates data from User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX), streamlining operations. “We transformed data handling—what took months now takes weeks, enhancing flexibility,” Fernandes notes.

Addressing Gaps

The system ensures high-quality vessel reports; automated data estimation fills gaps. QRT (Online Query Reporting Tool) optimizes analysis, while cloud simulations enhance data utility.

Emission Focus

Weathernews upgraded OSR-e and PMS-e for Total Fleet Management, integrating Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and CO2 environmental data. This aids emissions target management. “Our solution manages CII ranking and CO2 targets, supporting decarbonization efforts with real-time routing,” Fernandes states. “We’re agile, innovating sustainably to meet customer needs—ensuring operational and environmental efficiency,” he concludes.
